UNESCO/UNITWIN Chair on Cultural Heritage and Digital Memory

Cultural heritage is the whole of the tangible and intangible values of a community throughout its generations. The transfer of these values to future generations is directly related to the fact that the heritage is known and understood by the members of the society. The realization of sustainable conservation is possible through the development of coherent conservation principles as well as by making the heritage visible.

Cultural Heritage in a Digital World

The visibility of the cultural heritage is only possible with the active inclusion of digital platform along with the traditional methods, which is developing day by day and which enables to work on different options according to the characteristics of the heritage, in the identification, documentation and archive creation process. At the same time, the importance of digital methods in the visual presentation and representation of the heritage is increasing day by day, and many applications that cannot be done by traditional methods are realized through digital programs. In the age of internet and technology, active usage of the potential of digital methods in making the heritage visible, increases the rapid production of information as well as the possibility of rapid dissemination of the information produced. Thus, it will be easier for the society to reach and share the information regarding the heritage, and individuals will be involved in the production of collective memory by being a part of the process of heritage conservation.
